I am reading neighborhood blogs which refer to the problem of the high concentration of the “mentally ill population” in uptown. They suggest that the Somerset residents need to be relocated by being dispersed throughout the city, in various facilities.
What people are still missing is that these residents have a right to choose to live where they please if the facility they desire will accept them. NEWS FLASH…these uptown residents are choosing to stay near their familiar settings. They consider uptown their home. A large majority of them will continue to live in uptown in their neighborhood. So for those that hoped that Somerset would close and all the residents would go away…not the case.
I encourage all to weigh in on the current issue at the forefront which is the Illinois Mental Health System as a whole. Somerset is a symptom of our failed system.
